Verification record

How current is Montana’s pharmacy staffing rule, and how does RxShift know?

Last verified 2026-10-13. Read from the dated copy the issuing body serves and recorded word for word; the weekly re-check on 2026-10-19 confirmed every recorded passage in that copy. The issuing body publishes no live page for this rule, so the date above rests on the read itself.

The rule on file

ARM 24.174.411; ARM 24.174.711. No pharmacist-to-technician ratio. Montana leaves the number of technicians a pharmacist supervises to the pharmacist-in-charge (ARM 24.174.711). Its schedule rule is a pharmacist break: in a pharmacy staffed by a single pharmacist, the pharmacist shall take a meal or rest break on the premises of up to 30 minutes per shift, without closing the pharmacy (ARM 24.174.411).

That is the sentence the Montana page states. The passages below are what the issuing body served when RxShift read it, kept as a dated record so a pharmacy and its counsel can check the sentence against the source. How a rule is read is decided by people and recorded with its date; no automated check can change a reading. RxShift reports deficiencies against this reading; it does not certify compliance, and nothing here is legal advice.

The recorded passages

Recorded word for word on the read of 2026-10-19. Each week an automated re-check opens every official source named here and confirms each passage is still on the page as served; the mark on each passage is what the newest re-check (2026-10-19) found.

Every read and every re-check, newest first

A dated read is RxShift reading the issuing body’s text and recording it in a dated report; its public note is repeated here word for word from the updates log. A re-check is the weekly automated comparison of the recorded passages against the live page. People decide every reading; a re-check never changes one.

Montana still sets no numeric limit on how many pharmacy technicians a pharmacist may supervise: under ARM 24.174.711(1) the pharmacist-in-charge determines the ratio, and a pharmacist intern does not count against it. Under ARM 24.174.411, in a pharmacy staffed by a single pharmacist, the pharmacist shall take a meal or rest break on the premises of up to 30 minutes per shift without closing the pharmacy, and under ARM 24.174.703(10) a technician may not be left in charge for more than 30 minutes. The Board of Pharmacy's rulemaking notices show no change to these rules since December 6, 2025.

Montana requires that a pharmacist working alone take a meal or rest break of up to 30 minutes per shift, on the premises, without closing the pharmacy (ARM 24.174.411). Since December 6, 2025 a pharmacy technician may hold the pharmacy during that break but may not be left in charge for more than 30 minutes (ARM 24.174.703(10)). Montana sets no numeric pharmacist-to-technician ratio, no maximum shift length and no required rest period between shifts. The adopted text was re-read today from the Board of Pharmacy's own rulemaking notices.

Montana does not set a numeric pharmacist-to-technician ratio. The Board of Pharmacy eliminated its former 1:4 ratio in 2022. RxShift does not model a Montana ratio because there is none to model; whether Montana has hour, break or documentation rules that RxShift could support has not yet been researched.

What the re-check results mean

  • Confirmed: every recorded passage was still on the issuing body’s page as served that day.
  • Mismatch: at least one passage was not found. It is reported as it stands, a person looks, and the rows after it show what followed.
  • Not allowed: the issuing body’s site does not permit automated reading, so the rule rests on its dated read, by a person where the page can only be opened in a browser.
  • Nothing to match, no baseline: the record on file held no passage the re-check can match, or no report yet qualified as its baseline.
