Nebraska pharmacies
How many technicians can a pharmacist supervise in Nebraska?
In Nebraska, one pharmacist may supervise any combination of pharmacy technicians and pharmacist interns, up to a total of 4 people, under Neb. Rev. Stat. § 38-2866.01(1). When a pharmacist supervises 4 pharmacy technicians, at least one must be a certified pharmacy technician.
Nebraska allows 4 people per pharmacist, and a certified technician for the fourth technician.
Up to four people per pharmacist, in any mix of pharmacy technicians and interns. A certified pharmacy technician is needed only when a pharmacist supervises four technicians, and interns do not trigger that requirement.
The rules
How Nebraska’s pharmacist-to-tech ratio works.
4 people per pharmacist in any combination of pharmacy technicians and pharmacist interns (Neb. Rev. Stat. § 38-2866.01(1))
A certified technician for the fourth technician: for any pharmacist supervising four pharmacy technicians, at least one must be a certified pharmacy technician (§ 38-2866.01(3), as amended by LB912, April 15, 2026)
Pharmacy interns: pharmacy interns count toward the same limit as technicians, and they do not trigger the certification requirement
Certified means a Board-accepted certification: the Board of Pharmacy's list includes the PTCB and NHA ExCPT certifications and several Nebraska state programs
Nebraska counts people, not only technicians. A pharmacist may supervise up to four, in any combination of technicians and interns, and a pharmacy with two pharmacists on duty may have up to eight. Certification matters only when the technicians pile up: a pharmacist supervising three technicians never needs a certified one, but four technicians need at least one. With two pharmacists on duty, the first certified technician is needed once the technicians reach seven, and the second at eight.
That requirement changed in April 2026. Before LB912, the certified technician was needed for four technicians or interns. Since April 15, 2026 it applies only to four technicians, so three technicians and an intern do not need a certified technician, while four technicians with no certified technician is still over the line.
What counts as certified is any certification the Board of Pharmacy accepts: the PTCB and NHA ExCPT certifications and the Nebraska state programs on the Board’s list. The list the Department of Health and Human Services publishes is dated 2019, so check the Board’s current list before marking a technician as certified.
For pharmacy interns, RxShift applies this: pharmacy interns count toward the same limit as technicians, and they do not trigger the certification requirement. A pharmacist must be on duty to supervise them, and an intern never counts as the certified one.

Questions
Common questions
What is the pharmacist-to-technician ratio in Nebraska?
In Nebraska, one pharmacist may supervise any combination of pharmacy technicians and pharmacist interns, up to a total of 4 people, under Neb. Rev. Stat. § 38-2866.01(1). When a pharmacist supervises 4 pharmacy technicians, at least one must be a certified pharmacy technician.
Does certification change Nebraska's ratio?
It does not raise the total of 4, but it decides whether a pharmacist may supervise four technicians. Under § 38-2866.01(3), for any pharmacist supervising four pharmacy technicians, at least one must be a certified pharmacy technician. A pharmacist supervising three technicians needs none. With two pharmacists on duty, a pharmacy may have up to 8 people, and the first certified technician is needed once the technicians reach 7, the second at 8. RxShift applies this: the cap is fixed, but the upper technician slots can only be filled once enough of the technicians are certified; pharmacy interns take slots in the cap without triggering that requirement, and an intern never counts as the certified one.
What counts as a certified pharmacy technician in Nebraska?
A certification from a program the Board of Pharmacy accepts. The Board's list includes the PTCB and NHA ExCPT certifications and several Nebraska state programs, and the list the Department of Health and Human Services publishes is dated 2019. Check the Board's current list before marking a technician as certified in RxShift.
Do pharmacy interns count toward Nebraska's ratio?
RxShift applies this: pharmacy interns count toward the same limit as technicians, and they do not trigger the certification requirement. A pharmacist must be on duty to supervise them.
Does Nebraska limit pharmacy shift length or require breaks?
We found no such limit. Nebraska's pharmacy statutes and Board rules, as read in October 2026, set no maximum shift length, no minimum rest between shifts and no required break for pharmacy staff.
