How many technicians can a pharmacist supervise in Alabama?
Alabama scales the cap with certification: 2 technicians when none are certified, 3 when at least one is certified, and 4 when at least two are certified. Four per pharmacist is a hard ceiling under rule 680-X-2-.14(5).

It’s an easy rule to get backwards. Alabama’s mechanic is the opposite of a state like Tennessee, where certified techs are uncapped and don’t count at all. Here, a certified technician still occupies one of the slots. They’re what unlocks the next slot in the first place. Two techs with no certifications is the floor; four is the ceiling no matter how many are certified beyond that.

With more than one pharmacist on duty: a certified technician raises the limit only for the pharmacist he or she works under. The certified technicians are not shared across the pharmacy. Does hiring more certified technicians raise Alabama's cap above 4?

Do pharmacy interns count toward Alabama’s ratio?
No. Rule 680-X-2-.14(5) counts technicians, and the same rule authorises permitted interns and externs separately from registered technicians. A different rule, 680-X-2-.16(7), limits a preceptor to three externs and interns at any one time.
