How many technicians can a pharmacist supervise in West Virginia?
Six. W. Va. C.S.R. 15-7-5.3 lets one pharmacist supervise up to 6 pharmacy technicians and/or pharmacy technician trainees.
West Virginia allows 6, and trainees share the same 6.
A pharmacist may supervise up to 6 pharmacy technicians and technician trainees together. The word that matters is “and/or”: trainees are inside the 6, not added on top of it. RxShift counts the pool the way the rule does and flags the hour that goes over before you publish.

The number to get right is what shares it. West Virginia’s rule reads “six pharmacy technicians and/or pharmacy technician trainees”, so a crew of four technicians and two trainees is at the limit, not under it. A pharmacy reading the 6 as six technicians with trainees on top would be over on a routine day.
Interns sit outside the count entirely, which is the opposite of a state like Virginia, where anyone performing technician duties shares the same four slots. RxShift applies the exclusion automatically once a person’s role is set to pharmacy intern, and still checks that a pharmacist is on duty to supervise them.
Certification is a vocabulary trap here. In Alabama or Massachusetts, certifying a technician raises what the pharmacy is allowed to schedule. In West Virginia it changes nothing, because national certification is already a condition of registering at all. The 6 applies whatever the mix.
The rule was re-promulgated effective July 1, 2026, and the ratio itself was not part of that change. What moved was technician renewal, a deleted training programme requirement and the certification window.

Hours and breaks
West Virginia caps 12 continuous hours and requires breaks at eight and twelve.
W. Va. C.S.R. 15-15-8 limits a pharmacist, pharmacy intern or pharmacy technician to 12 continuous hours in any 24-hour period, breaks included, and requires a 30-minute meal break on a shift of eight hours or more, with an additional 20 minutes on a shift of 12 hours. RxShift flags more than 12 hours in a day, an eight-hour shift with less than 30 minutes of break, and a 12-hour shift with less than 50, for all three roles, before you publish. RxShift measures the 12 hours per calendar day.
The rule also says nobody may be required to work more than five continuous hours before being offered the meal break, and it requires the pharmacy to keep a record of each pharmacist's daily break periods. RxShift documents the placement rule rather than enforcing it, since a schedule records break length, not timing. The published schedule and the hour-by-hour compliance record are the kind of record that duty asks for.
